Abstract

The phase diagram of the cadmium-rich region of the cadmium-neptunium system has been determined. The solubility of neptunium in liquid cadmium may be expressed by the equations: (320–485 °C) log X Np = 4.099–4397 T −1; (485–626 °C) log X Np = 0.4589–1636 T −1 where X Np is the atom fraction of Np at T in °K. Two intermetallic compounds were found in this system: NpCd 11, cubic (BaHg 11-type), a = 9.288 A ̊ and NpCd 6, cubic (CeCd 6-type) a = 15.614 A ̊ . At 485 °C, NpCd 11 peritectically decomposes into NpCd 6 and a liquid Cd-2 at.% Np solution.
