Abstract

Cadmium (Cd) is a worldwide toxic heavy metal pollutant, which has brought about severe health risks to humans. This chapter would introduce the current status of Cd contamination in agricultural soil worldwide, which was mainly ascribed to the anthropogenic sources of fertilization, mining, agricultural application of sewage sludge, and waste water irrigation. Diversified Cd contaminations were summarized in different crop species such as leafy vegetables, cereal, and other crops, with considerable health risk observed in Cd contaminated leafy vegetables. Different factors affecting Cd accumulations in crops, including soil physical- chemical characteristics, species, and cultivars of different Cd tolerance, were illustrated to provide comprehensive insight on Cd accumulations in crops. Further, novel insight was provided in exogenous regulation of Cd accumulation in different crops, especially in leafy vegetable.
