Abstract
At the heart of José de Cadalso's Cartas marruecas lie questions of personal, social, cultural, and national identity, which the author explores through the central notion of the hombre de bien. In this paper, I consider the nature of the notions of identity that are questioned and constructed in the Cartas marruecas and discuss the extent to which they reveal to us an author who demonstrates what Foucault terms a 'consciousness of modernity' and an heroic attitude to the challenges of his time.
