Abstract

A new technique for wall shear stress measurement is proposed by using paint thickness change on the wall. In this method, the wall shear stress is represented by paint erosion. The thickness of paint is measured by light transmission power instantaneously using image, and the wall shear stress is calculated by decreasing ratio of paint thickness owing to erosion. The effectiveness of the measurement was examined in a flat plate flow. The following results were obtained: There was a relationship based on the exponential decay law between light transmission and thickness of paint. Paint displacement on the wall surface was negligible small and thickness change of the paint was caused by only erosion effect from the surface of the paint. A constant relationship between the paint erosion speed and the main flow velocity was observed and the paint erosion speed had no relation with the paint thickness. We consider the paint erosion speed was related to wall shear stress, and this new method will be useful to measure the wall shear stress.
