Abstract

Especially, we have reported the pre-paration of C18 modified and endcapped ground monolithparticles of 5-10 µm and showed that the C18 ground mono-lith particles had merits of improved separation efficiencyover the conventional C18 particles. However, we were ableto produce only the particles larger than 5 µm in that study. In this study, we have improved the process to obtainground monolith particles of 3-5 µm resulting in even betterseparation efficiency. ExperimentalMaterials. HPLC grade water and methanol were pur-chased from Fisher (Pittsburg, PA, USA) and used withoutpurification. Tetramethoxysilane (TMOS), 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexa-methyldisilazane (HMDS), acetic acid, PEG 10000 (poly-ethyleneglycol, MW 10000), chlorooctadecyldimethyl-silane, trimethylchlorosilane, toluene, and pyridine werepurchased from Aldrich (Milwaukee, IL, USA). The AlltimaC18 (3 µm, 80 A) stationary phase was obtained fromAlltech (Deerfield, IL, USA).Preparation of ground silica monolith particles. Thereaction mixture of TMOS, polyethylene glycol, and aceticacid was prepared as in the previous report
