Abstract

May-Thurner (Cockett) syndrome is described as compressive iliac venous syndrome that arises from compression of left common iliac vein by right common iliac artery as it travels from the aortoiliac bifurcation to the right inguinal region. These anatomical conditions are considered to be normal. However, in some patients the vein between the fifth lumbar vertebral body posteriorly and the artery anteriorly is compressed and stenotic. This iliac vein compression may be clinically asymptomatic or lead to thrombosis.
