Abstract

Abstract Charles V, as he became known when he was crowned emperor of the Holy Roman Empire in June, 1519, was born February 24, 1500, in Ghent (modern Belgium). He was the last emperor to be crowned by the pope. He also served as king of Spain, where he was called Carlos I. His paternal grandfather was Emperor Maximilian I, whom he succeeded as emperor, and one of his aunts was Catherine of Aragon, King Henry VIII's first wife. His son Philip was married to Mary Tudor, daughter of Henry VIII.
