Abstract

Professor C. F. Powell, Hon FInst P, FRS, died on holiday in Italy on 9 August 1969, aged 65, very shortly after his retirement from the Directorship of the H. H. Wills Physical Laboratory at the University of Bristol. A research student of C. T. R. Wilson at Cambridge, he had been at Bristol since 1928, initially as Research Assistant to Prof. A. M. Tyndall, becoming Melville Wills Professor of Physics in 1948 and Henry Overton Wills Professor and Head of the Physics Department in 1964.
