Abstract

It would be a mistake to consign C 1 chemistry to the indefinite future, to a time when crude oil becomes a prohibitively expensive feedstock and relatively cheap coal fills the void. Although that will happen eventually, C 1 chemistry already has become a major research and development topic around the world, a growing, if embryonic, commercial reality, and a promising means to reacquire stability in the chemical industry. Despite disagreement over how far C 1 chemistry has come and where it will go, money and manpower have been allocated to R&D, commercial development, and at least two major industrial complexes. The current assessment and possible future directions that C 1 chemistry might take were explored by the American Chemical Society's Division of Petroleum Chemistry at the ACS national meeting in New York City last month.
