Abstract

Chiasmata in male meiosis of Allium flavum from early diplotene to metaphase I are found to occur almost exclusively very close to the terminal and intercalary C-bands. Heterozygosity of intercalary C-bands, where one homologue has one band missing, allows the direct proof that chiasmata do not terminalise and therefore mark the point of exchange.
