Abstract

This chapter examines the relationship between Milton's Paradise Regained and Byron's Cain. It compares these two works with particular emphasis on the concepts of intellectual freedom and Christian liberty. To understand Milton's view in these matters it cites his posthumously published De Doctrina Christiana. The chapter begins with a general introduction to the subject. It then discusses Miltonic influence on Cain via Salomon Gessner's The Death of Abel. Next, it identifies parallels between Paradise Regained and Cain in terms of characterisation, structure, Biblical reference and the kingdom within. Finally, it speculates on unorthodox Socinian perspectives in the two works.
