Abstract

FOR many years there has been debate about the role of London's 12 undergraduate medical schools and their associated teaching hospitals. They all have long and distinguished histories, and the names of many are known around the world. St. Bartholomew's Hospital, best known as Bart's, claims to be the oldest and was founded by the monk Rahere in 1123. St. Thomas' was next in 1215, and then it was not until the 18th and 19th centuries that the majority of the other London teaching hospitals appeared and their medical schools were established.
