Abstract

The bulk of microcomputer software is intended to be sold ‘off the shelf’, so a high proportion of the cost of producing it is spent on presentation and marketing. This is not necessarily to the buyer's disadvantage because much of the expenditure is on items such as documentation and support, areas often ignored in the past for low margin/high volume sales products. Prices may, however, drop or at least stabilize in the future because of the trend towards more powerful hardware at lower prices and more effective software protection against illegal copying.
