Abstract

Caught in the liminal spaces between dreams and reality, between tradition and modernity, the protagonists of Jia Pingwa’s fiction have become synonymous with those who stand at the threshold between irreconcilable realties, much like the author himself. Like a modern retelling of a tale from the Zhuangzi, Jia Pingwa asks his readers to reflect on who Chinese writers and intellectuals have become, and many have not liked his answers.
