Abstract

This article reports the results of a research project examining the development, content and use of mission statements in UK business schools. It examines how business schools resolve the difficulties which apparently exist when a for-profit management tool is employed in an institution of higher education. The findings of this study indicate that the mission statements of UK business schools are largely related to their planning processes and are perceived as being primarily a device to articulate the purpose of the school to its stakeholders.
