Abstract
Abstract Considers how business elites have fared in upheaval and prosperity. While business leaders have clearly been at the top of the social hierarchy since 1918, wealth, or at least great wealth, has no longer been the primary source of the business leaders’ status and power. Relations with other elite groups could be conflictual, and lead to temporary setbacks. Above all, business leaders have been confronted with a much higher level of state intervention, which has heavily affected their own political involvement. Convergence has been an uneven process, which only gathered pace after the Second World War, and did not eradicate national singularities.
