Abstract

There have been recent calls in the literature for contextualised, entrepreneurial centric studies on business closure and failure. Most organisational collapse models to date were derived from literature reviews and already available public data but lacked first hand empirical data from entrepreneurs. This research paper examines the actions, response and consequences faced by 30 entrepreneurs when navigating their exit as a result of business closure. The entrepreneurs were from the ICT producing services sector, which was a turbulent and uncertain environment to operate in as it was establishing itself in the ICT industry. The study highlighted the variances amongst entrepreneurs in terms of actions, responses and consequences and resulted in 4 distinctive pathways, namely the Opportunist, the Pragmatist, the Experimentalist and the Purist.
