Abstract

The purpose of this research is to propose a theoretical framework regarding the Malcom Baldrige National Quality Award (MBNQA) winners and non-winners and the relationship between them and improved firm performance level. The connection in this proposed framework is moderated by the choice of business excellence model (BEM), the commitment level of management, and the board and management structure. TQM and Six Sigma are the two BEM moderators in this study. Both incorporate slightly different perspectives on management techniques. The summarization of this paper is that managerial commitment impacts the improved firm level performance. TQM and Six Sigma frameworks closely align with the MBNQA criteria. Board and management structure moderates award status by impacting managerial commitment and the BEM model chosen for the company by the decision made by and leadership shown at the management level. Finally, financial performance of MBNQA winners does outpace the (Standard and Poor) S&P 500.
