Abstract

The chapter aims at challenging the well-known notion that big business has to be blamed for not only having supported the Nazis taking over power in Germany but also having profited largely from Hitler’s pushing for war. The chapter gives an overview of the relevant literature on the relationship between German businesses and the Nazi regime. Since some of these publications broadened our empirical knowledge on the actual behavior of German firms, the question whether the companies intentionally collaborated with the Nazi regime in order to maximize profit even if human rights got violated can be discussed on a much broader base—so the chapter claims. Analyzed with a system-theoretic approach to the evolution of organizations, decision-making within corporations was found to be highly driven by routines and tradition that cannot be changed overnight.
