Abstract

During a recent discussion with US governors, President Bush set the tone for his pro-life policy on abortion, which will have consequences for stem cell research in the USA. He said that no federal money should be spent on research on fetal tissue or stem cells derived from abortions. ‘I do not support research from aborted fetuses’ he said, and ‘I believe there's some wonderful opportunities for adult stem-cell research.’ American stem cell scientists fear that new, more restrictive legislation might set back US stem cell research, especially compared with the more liberal climate in the UK. Glenn McGee, bioethicist at the University of Pennsylvania and editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Bioethics, in an article published in the New York Times, put it this way: ‘Right about now, everybody in America who works in stem cells is looking into the price of a business-class ticket to London. All the good work will move there gradually.’ J.d.B.
