Abstract

The authors present a study which aims to clarify and enlighten the professional competences profile of the Special Education Coordinator in Portuguese regular schools with particular attention to the supervisory part connected with his role and action. After a short approach to the state of the art about the supervisory process in Special Education, an empiric study was presented which involved the use of an inquiry by means of a questionnaire directed to three groups of key-informers (whose opinion was considered relevant to the establishment of the SEC role and functions): SE teachers, SECoordinators and single schools or groups of schools Headmasters, belonging to DSRC of DGEstE. The results point to non-uniform organizational /supervisory frame in Special Education although they could also lead to identifying a satisfactory leadership action of the SE Coordinator, based on activities involving dialogue and reflection and respecting principles of collaboration and solidarity.
