Abstract
Certain elementary transcendental mappings of the complex plane such as λ exp( z) and iλ cos( z) are shown to experience a sudden burst into chaos. The Julia set for these maps changes instantaneously from a nowhere dense, small portion of the plane to the entire plane at a critical λ-value.
