Abstract

Increased numbers of burr cells appear following splenectomy especially in those patients splenectomized for idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. However, all splenectomized children demonstrate this phenomenon regardless of the basic disorder. The varieties of burr cells and fragmented red cells are discussed with reference to their morphologic appearance and the pathologic states in which they occur.
