Abstract

Accidental burn injuries are common. Estimates by the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare indicate that two million individuals of all ages sustain burn injuries each year. One hundred thousand of these require hospitalization and the remainder are managed as out-patients. Physicians involved in primary care are potentially responsible for initial evaluation, decision-making about referral and hospitalization, and office treatment of individuals who do not require hospitalization.
