Abstract

Burn injury remains a prominent cause of morbidity and mortality in children, most notably in the developing world. A significant proportion of burn injury may be prevented by improvements in safety measures, legislation, and education. Basic first aid measures and early fluid and wound management may reduce its severity.Major pediatric burns should be referred timeously to burn units where there is ready access to multidisciplinary resources and expertise. Early surgical management for the deep burn should be supported by modern critical care practices, nutrition, and infection control. Rehabilitation and reconstructive surgery for major pediatric burns is usually a protracted and often agonizing journey. This chapter overviews the management of major burn injury in children, with reference to epidemiology, preventative strategies, conservative and surgical indications and practices, dressing choices, nutrition, management of infection, and rehabilitation.
