Abstract
Today, customers expect high reliability, low cost, and versatile goods. Some practices related to successful production systems have been discussed in Chapter 1. Statistical analyses can further enhance reliability analysis. In this chapter, we review some widely used techniques for reliability analysis, especially those for burn-in. A product, which will also be called a system or an item, may contain subsystems or modules. For simple products, like a flashlight, we may use components to indicate the modules (that is, the bulb of a flashlight is treated as a component as well as a module). Formal definitions for component, subsystem, and system will be given in Section 6.1.3. This chapter begins by listing basic definitions and considerations related to burn-in which will be used hereafter. A summary of analytic techniques and previous work on burn-in follows. The last section of the chapter describes some cost parameters that are usually taken into account in optimization models.
