Abstract

This study undertakes a comparative analysis of the clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical (IHC) features, and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) status of 52 cases diagnosed as Burkitt lymphoma in the head and neck (BLHN) region in patients from South Africa, Guatemala, and Brazil. BLHN was predominant in pediatric patients and males, with a mean age of 11.26 ± 9.68 years. Neck and cervical lymph nodes and involvement of both maxilla and mandible were the most common anatomical sites. Clinically, tumor/swelling, cervical lymphadenopathy, pain, and bone destruction were frequent findings. All cases showed a monotonous proliferation of intermediate-sized B cells with numerous mitotic figures and apoptotic bodies. Most cases exhibited a starry-sky pattern. IHC profiles included positivity for CD20, CD10, Bcl6, and c-Myc protein. The Ki-67 index ranged from 90% to 100%. EBV was positive in 18 cases (62.07%). The clinicopathologic and EBV profiles of BLHN in South African, Guatemalan, and Brazilian patients is similar.
