Abstract

Burchellia R.Br. (Rubiaceae: Ixoroideae) is endemic to southern Africa. The type species, B. bubalina (L.f.) Sims, is based on Lonicera bubalina L.f., for which we designate a lectotype. We provide an account of the genus with comprehensive nomenclature and synonymy, including a taxonomic history of all names, and morphological descriptions for the genus and species, as well as distribution and ecological notes. The occurrence of hairy pocket-domatia in the species is variable. Examination of material from throughout the range of the species reveals a continuous pattern of variation in leaf size, shape and density of the vestiture, as well as in the size and colour of the corolla. We accordingly recognise a single variable species.
