Abstract

Twenty heifer calves were individually fed ligh-concentrate finishing diets, with or without buquinolate, during a 70-day comparison aeriod. Drug level in the treated diet was 44 ppm (200 ppm, BONAID® premix)1. Average daily gain, feed intake and carcass characteristics were similar (P>.05) for animals fed the medicated and non-medicated rations. Apparent digestibility of feed nutrients was not different (P>.05) due to treatment. Heifers fed the basal and basal plus buquinolate diets had similar (P>.05) rumen fluid concentrations of acetic, iso-valeric and valeric acids. However, buquinolate fed heifers had greater (P<.05) concentrations of propionic acid and smaller (P<.05) concentrations of butyric acid in the rumen fluid. Rumen fluid pH and total volatile fatty acid concentrations were not different (P>.05) due to treatment.
