Abstract

There is a large diversity in the size and shape of paired pectoral and pelvic fins among fishes. Paired fins have many functions, including display, protection, and reproduction. Many fish species also use paired fins for locomotion. Fins are supported by a bony skeleton and are powered by sets of muscles. Depending on fin size and shape, fish use them to produce forces that control the body. In this way, fins are used for both propulsion and maneuvering.
