Abstract
The Northumbrian tongue travel has not taken from me sometimes sounds strange to men used to the koine or to Americans who may not know how much Northumberland differs from the Saxon south of England. Southrons would maul the music of many lines in Briggflatts. (Bunting's note to Briggflatts)1 MOTTRAM Did you ever think of writing in a transcription of something like Northumberland dialect? BUNTING It's been tried but it's unworkable because there is no spelling convention that will fit it. Swinburne made a serious attempt to write ballads in Northumbrian, failed, and translated them into Scots lowland Scots. (Bunting, interviewed by Eric Mottram)2 And over it all the atmosphere of power, power speaking impeccable Standard English. (John Braine, Room at the Top)3
