Abstract
Investigation is made on the longitudinal single bunch instability of the electron beam in a high energy storage ring. It is shown that the Robinson instability of a parasitic mode is caused by the interaction between a higher order synchrotron oscillation and a higher order resonate mode of an RF cavity. Two damping mechanisms, the Landau damping and the radiation damping, are investigated and the stability criteria are obtained.
