Abstract

This article examines the incidence of bullying in various organisations, including social work, at a time of increasing attention to bullying. Bullying, harassment, abuse and bullying behaviour are defined. Reactions to bullying are explored, as are relevant concepts related to empowerment in social work. Some strategies for counteracting the bully are proposed, including considering the role of the individual concerned, informal support, organisational responses, legal strategies and other helping opportunities.
