Abstract

ABSTRACTBullying affects adults and children and the reported cases are merely the tip of the iceberg. Some symptoms and signs of bullying are listed and the characteristics of the perpetrators are discussed. Various strategies to combat bullying are outlined. The children's charity, Kidscape, has developed programmes for children, involving role play and discussion, which demonstrate the importance of responsible behaviour. If a joint approach is adopted by parents, school staff and children, bullying can be reduced.Ten year old Melanie wrote to Kidscape: ‘None of the girls in my class will speak to me. They say I'm ugly and that no one will ever like me. Yesterday, I tried to drown myself in my bath, but I couldn't. I haven't told my mum. I hate school.
