Abstract

Free radical bulk copolymerizations of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA)/styrene (Sty) and CLA/butyl acrylate (BA) were performed at 80°C. Copolymers were characterized for composition, conversion, molecular weights and glass transition temperature (Tg). A pseudo-kinetic model was developed and validated with experimental data. Reactivity ratios estimations were performed and one impurity commonly found in CLA, oleic acid, influenced the reaction kinetics significantly. The Tg of CLA homopolymer was predicted to be 5°C.
