Abstract

his survey is based primarily on two recent writings in Bulgarian, which summarize very well the work done almost to the present. These are listed first in the bibliography. The writer has filled in a few gaps, especially details of bibliography, and added some titles in Western languages and some 1968 imprints. The bibliography appended is selective, however. While several early articles by Makhan' (Machaih in the original Czech) are included for historical perspective, most of the writings of Ivan Kamburov, for example, are omitted, as he was primarily a popularizer. Also omitted are articles on such subjects as how to redesign folk instruments for orchestral use, articles on the Kutev Professional Folk Ensemble, and so on. Extensive works on workers' songs and urban songs are present, as these are current subjects of research not only in Eastern Europe but also in the United States. Macedonia is not discussed.
