Abstract

Hepatitis D virus (HDV) is a defective RNA virus requiring hepatitis B virus (HBV) to complete its lifecycle.1 HDV viruses have been classified into eight genotypes on the basis of their genome diversity, with specific geographical distribution. HDV genotype 1 (HDV-1) is distributed throughout Europe, the Middle East, the Americas, and north Africa, whereas HDV genotypes 2–8 occur regionally (eg, HDV-2 in Japan, Taiwan, and Russia; HDV-3 in South America; HDV-4 in Japan and Taiwan; and HDV-5 to HDV-8 in Africa).
