Abstract

This chapter discusses the latest thinking on personal resilience, and shows how Functional Fluency provides insights into how leaders can become more resilient by using Golden Five behaviours both with others and with themselves. The survival instinct can trigger Purple Pitfall behaviours, but with greater understanding of ourselves and of the most effective behaviours, we can reduce the influence and the effects of our emotions, and use Accounting to build our personal resilience. The chapter shows how our immediate reactions from emotion lead to ineffective behaviours which can cause more stress, and why the use of the Golden Five leads to a more constructive outcome for all concerned. Through a series of case studies, the chapter demonstrates how others have overcome challenging situations, and built their intrapersonal resilience and interpersonal effectiveness using Accounting and other effective behaviours. Activities are included to enable readers to relate the learning to their own situations.
