Abstract

Recent years have witnessed increased attention to family-centered and community-based care of children with chronic illness or disability and their families. The professional skills and the partnership between care givers and parents that the optimal care of these children requires differ from those needed in acute illness. Curing is the predominant goal in the latter, caring in the former. The latter is well established, the former underdeveloped. This timely book is an important addition to our cumulative knowledge in a developing aspect of health care that belatedly is receiving greater visibility and attention. In providing practical, specific approaches and recommendations for both parents and practitioners, it impressively fulfills a widespread need of both professionals and parents for expert guidance and tutoring in a challenging health care arena.
