Abstract

E volution is the organizing principle in biology, d connecting the multiple and varied biological disciplines from molecular biology to anatomy, physiology and embryology. The recent Thomas B. Fordham Foundation analysis of the treatment of evolution by state science standards (Lerner 2000) stresses the need for teaching students the central role of evolutionary theory in the biological sciences. To make evolutionary theory relevant to students, we need to go beyond textbook reading assignments and simulations. Unfortunately, activities for high school students and undergraduates that demonstrate principles of evolutionary theory are hard to come by.
