Abstract

The purpose of this project was to provide an educational program aimed at building internal resources of pregnant ado-lescents living in a residential setting. This short-term group program used experiential techniques to teach coping skills and non-impulsive reactions to stress. A secondary goal was to develop strategies for self-control in order to prevent them from becoming abusive parents in the future. Sixty-five girls, ages 12 years to 17 years, completed the program with a majority expressing positive gains in understanding their feelings and learning better means to resolve problems. The authors present the program and discuss the importance of using self-mastery and resource building as an initial part of primary prevention programs in child abuse.
