Abstract
At a time when global energy and the environment are receiving increasing attention, the construction industry, which has a significant impact on these two factors, is the subject of numerous green buildings, energy-saving, and sustainable studies, such as passive buildings, green construction sites, renewable energy utilization, building energy management, etc. The evolution of these technologies has also resulted in an explosion of information regarding construction projects. Traditional architectural design, construction, operation and maintenance methods based on 2D drawings are insufficient for effectively integrating and utilizing these resources. Building Information Modelling (BIM) utilizes a set of defined processes to ensure the complete transfer of information from project requirements through the delivery of outcomes. The 3D visualization component of BIM makes it simpler for stakeholders to comprehend and accept this data. Therefore, the requirements and parameters for enhancing building performance can be incorporated into the design and implemented in the subsequent construction, operation and maintenance, and even demolition phases to achieve energy conservation and emission reduction goals effectively. This chapter will begin with a discussion of BIM׳s history, benefits, and drawbacks before introducing BIM׳s contribution to the various stages of building in the Common Data Environment (CDE). Simultaneously, the importance of BIM in energy conservation and emission reduction of buildings is presented in detail and shown in a case study.
