Abstract

Summary We use the development of an interactive program, which analyzes the results of experiments on rock samples and uses these results realistically in reservoir simulation, to illustrate various software engineering techniques. These techniques promote portability, flexibility, and fast application development through the reuse of existing software components. We describe guidelines for achieving compiler and windowing system independence, along with the benefits of using an object-oriented software architecture. A software module called the Calculator provides extendibility to the user by controlled exposure of internal program variables.
