Abstract

This paper presents a conceptual framework for building computer support into organizations. We advocate a holistic, cross-disciplinary view based on: (1) earlier works on Organizational Support Systems (Hacketorn, Keen [HAC 81] and their followers), (2) identified limitations on mainstream thinking about decision making (see e.g. Langley, Mintzberg et al. [LAN 95]), (3) concepts of creativity in design, (4) recent trends in the field of management and information technology, (5) a recent survey of case studies supported by different DSS researchers (e.g. [ADA 98]), (6) systems analysis. The recent changes in the structure, culture and technology of organizations are addressed with a number of propositions relating to OSS architecture.
