Abstract

As the pandemic accelerates the tectonic shift in global trade, many businesses face the questions of whether and where to reposition their upstream global supply chain. It is highly challenging to restructure global purchase orders and production capacity in a context rife with uncertainties. Focusing on managing geographically related risks, we build on mini case studies and risk management theories to design a compass for sustainable reglobalization. The framework provides managers and policymakers with a structured method to navigate the foggy terrain of postpandemic rebuild, integrate short- and long-term objectives, and elevate from corporate and national altitudes to collectively tackle the global challenge of climate change. We also recommend practical courses of action to implement the identified strategies of sustainable reglobalization. We conclude by discussing the limitations, highlighting the crucial need to close the data gap, and identifying priority areas for future concern.
