Abstract

This article describes the process for building an opening day collection for the new David Adamany Undergraduate Library at Wayne State University in Detroit. The specific philosophy and mission of the undergraduate library shaped the character and content of the collection, guiding decisions concerning subject scope, special collections, relocating materials from the other university libraries, and preferences for electronic over print resources. The article examines problems and successes with finding the best sources for a “core” collection for a new undergraduate library and covers methods for selecting typesb of material: monographs, serials, media and electronics. Budget issues and material expenditure breakdowns are discussed. The article concludes with a perspective on the process and advice for those facing a similar problem or situation.
