Abstract

author of this feature article writes, The best technical solution in the world may never be used if it doesn't have public support. Building consensus is often the most challenging part of getting projects off the drawing board. This article describes a five-step process for building consensus. steps are: 1) fully understand your idea, 2) plan the process, 3) develop an awareness, 4) educate the target groups, and 5) get a buy-in by the target groups. Some common pitfalls to consensus building related to planning and execution are listed. An example of consensus building for the Bistate St. Louis Area Intelligent Vehicle Highway System is included.
