Abstract
The spatial and energetic properties of an ion cloud confined in an RF quadrupole trap, together with the lifetimes of the confined ions, have been computed by statistical methods and recently by a simulation method.The influences of different parameters such as ion mass, buffer gas mass, working point in the stability diagram, "weak" space-charge and shape of the velocity distribution of the cooling buffer gas have been investigated and are described.
