Abstract

Euthanasia in its root meaning is good death. In Buddhist tradition, to help a person attain a good death involves both medical and spiritual discipline. To kill another person for reasons of mercy is out of the question, but unselfish suicide in some circumstances is condoned. If medicine for the dying is to be upāya, it will involve the intelligent and compassionate use of technology, but also, and even more importantly, will help the patient die in a way that enhances spiritual progress. In practice there are no easy answers or simple formulae. Each act must be weighed carefully as a step along the noble path of dharma
