Abstract

An energy method is developed for studying the distortional buckling of monosymmetric I-section beams subjected to elastic restraints. The buckling solution is developed in terms of an eigenproblem for four by four symmetric matrices. The distortional buckling of monosymmetric I-beams with translational, minor axis rotational and twisting restraint applied to the smaller tension flange is considered, and the solutions are compared with predictions which assume non-distortion of the cross-section.
